TEAM NEWS
Centre-half Zak Whitbread is in contention to return having recovered from a hamstring problem. On-loan Manchester United defender Ritchie de Laet (back) remains out. Striker James Vaughan is on course for a return in the new year from his knee problem, along with centre-back Elliott Ward (knee).
Alan Pardew has defensive problems. Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Mike Williamson (broken arm and ankle) are definitely out while Fabricio Coloccini (thigh) is very doubtful, meaning 21-year-old Hungarian Tamas Kadar could make his first appearance of the season. Midfielders Danny Guthrie (groin) and Cheik Tiote (knee) are also sidelined but winger Jonas Gutierrez is available again after suspension.
MANAGER QUOTES
Paul Lambert: “They have done fantastically well. They have’t lost many games. Alan has done terrifically well up there when you consider the expectancy level of that club. I say it every week but this is another tough one. Newcastle have performed really well as a team but we’re at home. The onus is on us."
Alan Pardew: "I'll never change from the philosophy that my teams have to be on the front foot wherever we play and that has served us well. At the end of the game, if it's tight and the other team are pressing, that's probably the only time we accept a draw. Other than that we'll always go for a win and we will on Saturday."
